What will the students learn about?

As part of the Listening and Appraising unit, students study 4 Areas of Study; Musical Forms and Devices, Music for Ensembles, Film Music, and Popular Music.  They have two set works; Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Movement 3 and Since You’ve Been Gone by Rainbow. 

These Areas of Study are also utilised through the performance and composition work that is undertaken during the course.

What skills will students develop and demonstrate?

Confidence, working with others, communication, problem solving, ICT skills, self-discipline.

How will students’ learning be assessed?

Performance: students undertake two performances; one solo, one ensemble.  Each performance is worth 15% of the final mark.  It is internally assessed and externally moderated.

Composition: students have to write two compositions and evaluate one of them in details.  Each composition is worth 15% of the final mark.  It is internally assessed and externally moderated.

Listening and Appraising: In June of Y11, students sit an hour’s listening exam based on the 4 Areas of Study and 2 Set Works mentioned earlier.  This exam is worth 40% of the final mark.  It is externally marked.

What grades can students achieve?

9 - 1

After completing this course – what can students progress on to?

Students could progress onto A Level Music or move into Performing Arts qualifications.  With the increased use of Music Technology, this is another avenue that could be explored.
